Dr. Syed Khalid Qais: A Lawyer, Veteran Journalist, Author and Thinker

Dr. Syed Khalid Qais is a lawyer, veteran journalist, author and intellectual by profession. He is the founder and National President of the Press Club of Working Journalists.

Among his notable books addressing the condition of journalists, their professional rights, and the role of journalism in democracy are The Fourth Pillar of Democracy Is Bloodied, Impartial Journalism Is Not Safe in the Country, and Hindi Journalism: The Foundation Stone of Democracy.

His forthcoming book, The Pen Is Still Alive, is also reportedly in the planning stage.

His philosophy, public statements, and the certificate of recognition he received on 30 September 2026, in connection with the International Pen of Conscience Award, offer insight into his principles and vision.

1. The Pen Is the Torch of Truth

According to the award committee, Dr. Qais’s fearless expression, moral integrity, and commitment to truth have inspired people to reflect and reconsider their perspectives. Words written with honesty and purpose have the power to awaken an entire generation.

Dr. Qais believes that journalism is not a means of flattering those in power; rather, it must serve as the voice of conscience.

2. Journalists’ Safety Is the Safety of Democracy

A central principle of Dr. Qais’s philosophy is that journalism guided by conscience is the true guardian of democracy.

Accordingly, he has made the establishment of legal protections for journalists, insurance and pension facilities, and official recognition of digital media journalists among the major goals of his professional life.

3. Impartiality and Fearlessness

He has stated that the honour belongs to all journalists who remain steadfast in their commitment to truth and ethical journalism despite challenging circumstances.

He believes that journalism must rise above differences of nationality, religion, and political affiliation and stand firmly on the side of truth alone.

4. Unity Is Strength

Dr. Qais believes that an isolated journalist may be vulnerable, but journalists who stand together can question even those in positions of power.

Guided by this philosophy, he has worked to develop the Press Club of Working Journalists into an organisation with a nationwide presence across India, bringing together journalists from different regions through its executive committee and organisational structure.

In essence, his life philosophy can be summarised in these words:

“Do not be afraid. Do not sell your conscience. Do not bow your head. Make your pen the voice of your conscience.”
